2024 Equality Myanmar Organizational Report (Democracy and Human Rights Movement Amidst the Compounded Crises in Myanmar)

Equality Myanmar (EQMM) – Democracy and Human Rights Movement Amidst the Compounded Crises in Myanmar

This report summarizes the activities and achievements of Equality Myanmar (EQMM) in 2024, a year marked by significant contributions to the advancement of Democracy and Human Rights in Myanmar. With gratitude for the grant opportunity provided, EQMM successfully implemented all planned initiatives, demonstrating a commitment to addressing the complex human rights landscape within the country.

A key focus in 2024 was the systematic documentation and dissemination of human rights violations. EQMM ensured that all documented cases were submitted to critical accountability mechanisms, including the Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM), to support the collection and analysis of evidence related to international crimes. Furthermore, documented evidence was shared with the Ministry of Human Rights (MOHR) of the National Unity Government (NUG) and various international human rights organizations, thereby contributing to a broader global understanding and informing potential legal and advocacy efforts. This strategic dissemination of information directly supports future transitional justice and accountability processes.

In addition to these efforts, EQMM actively invested in capacity building and protection. The organization implemented a range of crucial training programs, including human rights training, documentation training, psychosocial support training, transitional justice training, and safety and security training. These initiatives were designed to empower human rights defenders, pro-democracy activists, and community members. Furthermore, EQMM provided direct protection support to human rights defenders, pro-democracy activists, survivors, and community members facing risks.

In a concerted effort to promote human rights awareness and education at the grassroots level, EQMM also implemented International Human Rights Day events in collaboration with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), human rights defenders, community members, and survivors across different parts of Myanmar. These events critically advanced and strengthened human rights education amongst community members.

Furthermore, EQMM actively engaged in both international and national advocacy actions alongside local CSOs and human rights defenders. These collaborative efforts aimed at strengthening justice and accountability mechanisms throughout 2024.

In addition to this comprehensive approach to accountability, capacity building, human rights education, and advocacy, EQMM made a notable contribution to understanding and addressing conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV). The organization produced a dedicated CRSV report that meticulously documented the specific threats and oppression faced by women and children at the hands of the Burmese military junta and other armed groups. This report served as a crucial advocacy tool, providing essential evidence and analysis to advocate for enhanced protection, accountability for perpetrators, and support for survivors. This targeted research underscores EQMM’s commitment to addressing the gendered and age-specific dimensions of human rights violations within the context of the ongoing conflict.

This report, therefore, serves to present EQMM’s organizational contributions in 2024 to the Democracy and Human Rights Movement Amidst the Compounded Crises in Myanmar.
