Kachin State Human Rights Defenders Meeting

Kachin state human rights defenders meeting was held on 1st April, 2019 at Naung Nan Center, in Kachin state.

The purpose of the meeting is to share the ways of collaboration for human rights affairs among human rights defenders.

During the meeting, preparing for human rights and legal affair panel discussion, discussing on advocacy and setting plans could be done.

As speakers, Saya U Lynn Naing Nge and Sayama Daw Than Than Soie who are the alumni of EIDHR training of trainer Course participated in the discussion.

After that, the participants from relevant regions discussed and presented the situation of human rights violations happening in their local areas, for example, negative impact on local areas due to tissue culture banana cultivation, consequences of massive drug trafficking and child soldier recruitment issues.

The human rights defenders also drew up a plan for local advocacy process by identifying the main encountering issues.

And then, exchanging information of lawyers who can give legal advice for legal affair panel discussion could be done. Saya Aung Phyu Zin also shared the rights of disabled people to U Zaw Win, a Hluttaw representative in order to discuss and present the information at Hluttaw.

During the meeting, human rights defenders said that they were facing with the poor participation of local authorities and their poor accountability and responsibility, have difficulty in asking for permission and founding association, being threats, being pressured and being trailed.

The total number of participants who joined the meeting is 29. They are from BYN, MPHA, Dawn Peace-Foundation, Seng Ja IDPs, Alinn Bhamo Development Organizaion (ALBDO), F.M.O, New Lights, Mingalar(MGL), Shan Women Development Network (SWDN), LCM, KBP, DFSS, EQMM, TGL, Pan Pyoe Latt, MPHA, and Htoi San (LDO).
