Human rights awareness training conducted in Pathein

Equality Myanmar Yangon team organized a human rights awareness training from April 24th to 28th at Pathein, Irrewaddy division.

The purpose of this training was to share critical information to the target area, trainer lesson preparation, to upgrade advocacy skills and to increase human rights awareness in the Pathein area through trainers from March 2013.

Ni Lar Oo, a participant, said, “Before, I just only heard about human rights. I knew just that term and didn’t know anything further about it. After this training, I knew what human rights means, including being away from fear and hunger. Moreover, I came to know 30 articles of the UDHR [Universal Declaration of Human Rights]. Finally, I came to understand that everyone has responsibility in order to achieve human rights.”

Aung Ko Lwin, a participant from Nge Saung, said, “There have been human rights violations in the local community before. However, it wasn’t known what the rights actually were or how they were violated. That’s why it was hard to collect data about them. It has become clear what to do after this training.”

Yarzar Min Tun, a participant from Nga Pu Taw, added, “Through this training I came to know that human rights is very broad issue. Before, I didn’t know exactly what means what. Moreover, I came to know the limitations of human rights and requirements of the 2008 Myanmar constitution’s chapter 8. Before I did not know it very well. But now I know it clearly.”

Representatives of NLD, Union of farmers, Human Rights Defender Program, Network of Human Rights and other human rights activist, overall 20 from Nga Pu Taw, Nge Saung, Pathain, Thar Paung and Kangyi Daunt townships, were involved in training.

Win Naing, Thet Paing and Ekari Htun, the 2013 Yangon trainer team, conducted the training sessions.
