Second LGBT film festival proudly back on
The second &PROUD LGBT film festival, postponed two months because of last November’s election, will take place from January 28 to 31. The venue is the French Institute.
The 32 films featured will explore homosexual, lesbian, bisexual and transgender love, families and their stories from 17 countries, including Myanmar and other Southeast Asian countries.
Six of the films will be from Myanmar and Rainbow Reels, which organised 10 directors to shoot three short films and a documentary about human rights advocate U Aung Myo Min. Di Lo A Chit Myo (Love Like That) will be screened on opening night, January 28.
The Rainbow Reels shorts, entitled “Soulmates”, “Channel G” and “Dear Mum”, depict love, family and dating in the LGBT world.
Shot by the Yangon Film Training School and LGBT project, Love and Other Matters deals with the lives of three LGBT people, and She is a Male charts the life changes undergone by a transgender person. These two films will be shown along with the other international films during the festival period.
“Southeast Asian, Asian and international films proliferate, so that we have extended the festival by one day. This year, audiences will be bigger than they were at the last festival, with 2000 guests,” organiser Jan Willem van Rooij toldThe Myanmar Times.
Directors and performers will attend the festival and will be happy to join in post-viewing discussions about LGBT life and rights.
“The documentaries will focus on the problems and difficulties gays face in Southeast Asia, and on what it means to be LGBT. The films will also highlight their lives and relationships as well as their difficulties,” said Mr van Rooij.
The second &PROUD LGBT film festival is organised by LGBT rights activist organisations Colour Rainbow, Abadi Arts and YG.
