{"id":4882,"date":"2013-07-15T14:06:18","date_gmt":"2013-07-15T07:36:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/equalitymyanmar.org\/new-eng\/?p=4882"},"modified":"2026-01-28T12:50:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T06:20:09","slug":"rights-group-to-sue-police-for-sexually-assaulting-trans-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/equalitymyanmar.org\/?p=4882","title":{"rendered":"Rights group to sue police for \u2018sexually assaulting\u2019 trans-women"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"article-tools clearfix\">\n<dl class=\"article-info clearfix\">\n<dd class=\"create\">Monday, 15 July 2013<\/dd>\n<dd class=\"createdby\">DVB<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p>LGBT activists are planning to take legal action against Mandalay\u2019s police force following reports that the department\u2019s officers sexually humiliated and physically assaulted a group of transgender women last week.<\/p>\n<p>According to Equality Myanmar\u2019s director Aung Myo Min, his group is in the process of seeking legal advice and will file an official complaint against Mandalay\u2019s police station-3 if they find ample evidence to present.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe learnt the police sexually harassed them by pulling off their wigs and taking topless photos of them and also verbally abused them and forced them to do a \u2018catwalk\u2019 \u2013 this is completely inappropriate and a human rights violation,\u201d said Aung Myo Min.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are looking to consult with legal experts to determine whether the police had acted above the law and if that is the case [we will]file a report to the National Human Rights Commission as well as the regional government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a report published on the Irrawaddy\u2019s English language website last week, the victims of the assault said police arrested the group of twelve during a crackdown on an area frequented by sex workers in Mandalay.<\/p>\n<p>While in detention, the police reportedly sexually and physically abused the inmates, while shouting profanities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe police forcibly pulled off our clothes, kicked us and beat us. Our breasts were squeezed, scratched and beaten with police batons,\u201d said one of the victims, Myat Noe, during an interview with the Irrawaddy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd they forced us to do frog jumps, without clothes, and shout that we are not women but men. I\u2019ve never experienced terror like this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to an official at the Mandalay police station-3 who spoke with DVB, police arrested the transgender women on suspicion of plotting crimes because they were found \u201cin disguise as women\u201d near Mandalay\u2019s famed moat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Achauks [sexual slur for transgender women]disguising as Achauks by the moat, who were seemingly ready to commit a crime, were reported by residents in the area,\u201d said the official who spoke on the condition of anynomity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe pressed charges on five of them for masquerading on 7 and 8 of July.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The official added that police would continue arresting members of the group if authorities suspected that they were participating in \u201ccriminal activities\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Under section 377 of Burma\u2019s penal code, citizens are liable to fines and up to 10 years imprisonment if they are caught participating in \u201ccarnal intercourse against the order of nature\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Monday, 15 July 2013 DVB LGBT activists are planning to take legal action against Mandalay\u2019s police force following reports that the department\u2019s officers sexually humiliated and physically assaulted a group of transgender women last week.
