{"id":4873,"date":"2015-01-20T14:00:50","date_gmt":"2015-01-20T07:30:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/equalitymyanmar.org\/new-eng\/?p=4873"},"modified":"2026-01-28T12:48:31","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T06:18:31","slug":"myanmar-releases-prominent-rohingya-political-prisoner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/equalitymyanmar.org\/?p=4873","title":{"rendered":"Myanmar Releases Prominent Rohingya Political Prisoner"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"253\" data-total-count=\"253\"><span class=\"byline\">By <span class=\"byline-author\" data-byline-name=\"THE ASSOCIATED PRESS\">THE ASSOCIATED PRESS<\/span><\/span><time class=\"dateline\" datetime=\"2015-01-20\">JAN. 20, 2015<\/time><\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-1\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"253\" data-total-count=\"253\">YANGON, Myanmar \u2014 Rights groups welcomed the release of a prominent Rohingya Muslim doctor who was arrested while trying to calm rioters during sectarian violence in western Myanmar, but noted Tuesday scores of political prisoners remain behind bars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"150\" data-total-count=\"403\">The case against Tun Aung, sentenced to 17 years in prison following what was considered an unfair trial, received widespread international attention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"268\" data-total-count=\"671\">He was accused of inciting violence between Rohingya Muslims and Rakhine Buddhists in June 2012, though rights groups and witnesses said the medical doctor and respected community leader was asked by authorities to try to intervene but was unable to stop the violence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"110\" data-total-count=\"781\">Bo Kyi, co-founder of the Assistance Association of Political Prisoners (AAPP), said Aung was released Monday.<\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-2\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"352\" data-total-count=\"1133\">Myanmar has freed more than 1,000 political prisoners since former military rulers handed over power four years ago, a move that has smoothed the former pariah state\u2019s international rehabilitation. But jails continue to be filled up with hundreds of peaceful protesters, journalists and farmers who stood up against land grabs by the rich and powerful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"238\" data-total-count=\"1371\">\u201cEveryone incarcerated for their beliefs should be freed unconditionally and immediately,\u201d said Aung Myo Min, executive director of Equality Myanmar, adding the government \u201creleases a few political prisoners, and then arrests a few more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"36\" data-total-count=\"1407\">It\u2019s like a \u201chostage-swap,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"160\" data-total-count=\"1567\">Though years were sliced from Aung\u2019s sentence through regular amnesties and presidential pardons, international pressure appeared to provide the the final push.<\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-3\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"115\" data-total-count=\"1682\">UN Special Rapporteur on Myanmar, Yanghee Lee, met Aung in Insein prison during her visit to the country last week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"225\" data-total-count=\"1907\">Tom Malinowski, a senior U.S. human rights envoy, whose own trip coincided with Lee\u2019s, told Myanmar that no country wants to have the reputation of locking people up solely for peacefully protesting or expressing their views.<\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-4\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"54\" data-total-count=\"1961\">He also noted that laws appear to be unevenly applied.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"178\" data-total-count=\"2139\">No efforts were made to curtail extremist Buddhist monks who marched through the streets during Lee\u2019s visit, spewing hatred and accusing her of being biased in favor of Rohingya.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"323\" data-total-count=\"2462\">Myanmar has been grappling with rising Buddhist nationalism since former military rulers handed over power to a nominally civilian government in 2011, largely flamed by radical monks.
