{"id":4790,"date":"2016-10-21T13:16:29","date_gmt":"2016-10-21T06:46:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/equalitymyanmar.org\/new-eng\/?p=4790"},"modified":"2026-01-28T13:00:31","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T06:30:31","slug":"eu-demurs-on-new-un-human-rights-resolution-for-myanmar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/equalitymyanmar.org\/?p=4790","title":{"rendered":"EU demurs on new UN human rights resolution for Myanmar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By SEAN GLEESON | <a href=\"http:\/\/frontiermyanmar.net\/en\/news\/eu-demurs-human-rights-resolution-myanmar\">FRONTIER<\/a><\/p>\n<p>YANGON \u2014\u00a0For the first time in 25 years, the European Union has decided not to table a human rights resolution directed at Myanmar in the United Nations General Assembly, saying the government had taken \u201cbold steps\u201d to improve the country\u2019s human rights record.<\/p>\n<p>EU High Representative Ms Federica Mogherini cited the release of political prisoners, the government\u2019s commitment to the peace process and the appointment of its Advisory Commission on Rakhine State as reasons for the EU\u2019s decision, adding that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi\u2019s de facto leadership of the country was \u201cpowerful testimony to the incredible change Myanmar is going through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe road towards a diverse and inclusive democracy is never easy,\u201d Mogherini said Friday. \u201cBut I am convinced it\u2019s a challenge that we can face together, and we can win together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anticipating Friday\u2019s announcement, several rights groups condemned the EU\u2019s position, accusing it in a September 19 joint statement of \u201cputting trade and geopolitical interests\u201d ahead of human rights considerations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt makes no sense for the European Union to discontinue the UNGA resolution on Burma when 94 percent of the demands made in the last resolution have not been met,\u201d said the European Burma Network.<\/p>\n<p>Aung San Suu Kyi spoke at the UN General Assembly on September 21, her first appearance at the body since her National League for Democracy swept last November\u2019s general election.<\/p>\n<p>Discussing tensions in Rakhine State, where some 140,000 mostly Rohingya people remain in camps after communal violence in 2012, she issued a plea for \u201cthe understanding and constructive contribution\u201d of the international community while her government worked to broker a solution to the stalemate.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By SEAN GLEESON | FRONTIER YANGON \u2014\u00a0For the first time in 25 years, the European Union has decided not to table a human rights resolution directed at Myanmar in the United Nations General Assembly, saying the government had taken \u201cbold steps\u201d to improve the country\u2019s human rights record.
