{"id":4006,"date":"2018-01-18T15:37:40","date_gmt":"2018-01-18T09:07:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/equalitymyanmar.org\/new-eng\/?p=4006"},"modified":"2026-01-28T11:01:43","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T04:31:43","slug":"un-special-rapporteur-barred-from-visiting-myanmar-coming-to-bangladesh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/equalitymyanmar.org\/?p=4006","title":{"rendered":"UN special rapporteur, barred from visiting Myanmar, coming to Bangladesh"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"widget storyContent article widget-editable viziwyg-section-37 inpage-widget-29 article_lead_text\">\n<h5 class=\" print-only\">The UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Myanmar, Yanghee Lee, will visit Bangladesh and Thailand from Jan 18, vowing to fulfil her mandate even after the Burmese government\u2019s refusal to work with the UN official.<\/h5>\n<div class=\"fb-quote fb_iframe_widget\">\u201cI am determined to carry on \u2013 to the best of my ability \u2013 this very important task of helping the victims of human rights violations and abuses in Myanmar, as mandated to me by the United Nations system,\u201d Lee said, before departing on the 13-day trip, in a statement.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wrappingContent \">\n<div class=\"widget storyContent article widget-editable viziwyg-section-37 inpage-widget-21 article_body\">\n<div class=\"custombody print-only\">\n<p>\u201cBy not giving me access to Myanmar and by refusing to cooperate with the mandate, my task is made that much more difficult, but I will continue to obtain first-hand accounts from victims and witnesses of human rights violations by all means possible, including by visiting neighbouring countries where some have fled,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The special rapporteur will visit Bangladesh from Jan 18 to Jan 24 and Thailand thereafter until Jan 30.<\/p>\n<p>In Bangladesh, Lee will visit Dhaka and refugee camps and settlements near Cox\u2019s Bazar to meet with the refugees and community leaders. In Thailand, she will visit Bangkok, Mae Sot and Chiang Mai.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe (Myanmar) government has accused me of bias, while at the same time denying that human rights violations have taken place in Myanmar,\u201d Lee said. \u201cI would\u00a0ask the authorities to rethink their position and to put the victims first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have a responsibility to speak on behalf of these victims, and I will not be deterred. This is why I am going ahead to visit neighbouring countries to reach out as far as possible to all victims and witnesses to learn of their experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Following her visit, the human rights expert will present a report to the Human Rights Council in March.<\/p>\n<p>Lee, a South Korean citizen, was appointed by the UN Human Rights Council in 2014 as the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar.
