{"id":3991,"date":"2018-01-20T15:24:07","date_gmt":"2018-01-20T08:54:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/equalitymyanmar.org\/new-eng\/?p=3991"},"modified":"2026-01-28T12:47:23","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T06:17:23","slug":"myanmar-soldiers-sentenced-for-killing-3-civilians-in-kachin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/equalitymyanmar.org\/?p=3991","title":{"rendered":"Myanmar Soldiers Sentenced for Killing 3 Civilians in Kachin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"199\" data-total-count=\"199\">A Myanmar military tribunal has sentenced six soldiers to 10 years in prison for killing three civilians in the war-torn state of Kachin, officials said Saturday, in a move welcomed by rights groups.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"162\" data-total-count=\"361\">The Kachin state police office said the tribunal handed down the sentence after finding the soldiers guilty of killing three ethnic Kachin civilians in September.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"161\" data-total-count=\"522\">Kachin state is home to an ethnic rebel army that has been fighting Myanmar\u2019s military for years. More than 100,000 people in the state have fled the fighting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"281\" data-total-count=\"803\">The three civilians who were killed were among a group of five detained by soldiers in May while they were returning to their camp after gathering firewood. Two of the men were released, but three others never returned to the camp. Their bodies were later found in a shallow grave.<\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-1\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"209\" data-total-count=\"1012\">Rights groups said the prosecution of the six soldiers was rare and could indicate a step toward ending military impunity in Myanmar. Still, they raised concerns about the trial being held behind closed doors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"233\" data-total-count=\"1245\">\u201cThere\u2019s a good reason for the military to keep these trials behind closed doors: It makes it a lot easier to cover up widespread and systematic abuses,\u201d said David Baulk, the Myanmar human rights specialist for Fortify Rights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"295\" data-total-count=\"1540\">Myanmar\u2019s military has been accused of violating human rights with impunity for decades.
