The three women expressed disappointment with their fellow Nobel laureate, Aung San Suu Kyi, after meeting Rohingya Muslim women who were tortured and raped by soldiers in Burma (Myanmar).<\/p>\n<p>According to the Nobel Women\u2019s Initiative \u2013 a platform of six female peace laureates established in 2006\u00a0\u2013 Iran\u2019s Shirin Ebadi, Yemen\u2019s Tawakkol Karman and Northern Ireland\u2019s Mairead Maguire will examine the violence experienced by Rohingya women, as well as assess the overall situation of the refugees\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>After hearing detailed accounts of brutal torture at the hands of Burma\u2019s soldiers, Maguire gave an emotional interview, during which she struggled to hold back tears.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SEE ALSO:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/asiancorrespondent.com\/2018\/02\/childhood-interrupted-rohingya-children-live-fear-kidnap-rape-wild-animals\/#Hrc257J7hVDloQIi.99\">Childhood interrupted: Rohingya children live in fear of kidnap, rape, wild animals<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a slaughter of the innocence of the Rohingya people,\u201d she said, as reported by the\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhakatribune.com\/bangladesh\/nation\/2018\/02\/25\/nobel-laureates-emotional-rohingya-camp\/\">Dhaka Tribune<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0\u201cThis is a policy of the Burmese military of genocide, of ethnic cleansing, of the people of Rohingya.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both Maguire and Karman called on the international community to \u201cwake up\u201d and do more to help the Rohingya population. Source: Reuters\/Mohammad Ponir Hossain<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>They also made a plea to fellow Nobel laureate and Burma\u2019s de-facto leader.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s our\u00a0appeal to our sister Aung San Suu Kyi to wake up,\u201d said Karman. \u201cOtherwise she will be one of the perpetrators of this crime. If she can\u2019t stop all this crime, then she has to resign, now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Karman stopped short of calling for Suu Kyi\u2019s prosecution. While she said she did not want her \u201csister laureate\u201d to appear at the ICJ, Karman warned, \u201cif she continues her silence, she will be one of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>SEE ALSO:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/asiancorrespondent.com\/2018\/02\/aung-san-suu-kyi-guilty-crimes-humanity\/#AlX4VjPp6diEOZjp.99\">Aung San Suu Kyi could be guilty of crimes against humanity<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>More than 655,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled across the border to Bangladesh since \u201cclearance operations\u201d by the military began on Aug 25. Those who have escaped tell stories of mass rape, torture, mass killings and burning of villages by Burma\u2019s military. The United Nations have called it a \u201ctextbook example of ethnic cleansing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The military have denied these actions, despite the discovery of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/asiancorrespondent.com\/2018\/02\/corpses-puddles-acid-mass-graves-discovered-burma\/\">mass graves<\/a>\u00a0in Rakhine state.<\/p>\n<p>Aung San Suu Kyi has been noticeably absent in defence of the Rohingya people.
