{"id":3883,"date":"2018-04-18T13:12:44","date_gmt":"2018-04-18T06:42:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/equalitymyanmar.org\/new-eng\/?p=3883"},"modified":"2026-01-28T12:56:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T06:26:08","slug":"un-deputy-aid-chief-shines-light-on-plight-of-400000-rohingya-still-inside-myanmar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/equalitymyanmar.org\/?p=3883","title":{"rendered":"UN deputy aid chief shines light on plight of 400,000 Rohingya still inside Myanmar"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"field field-name-field-news-story-lead field-type-text-long field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/m-M4vrpkJ0s\" width=\"702\" height=\"395\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Although the massive outflow of Rohingya from Myanmar to Bangladesh grabbed worldwide headlines, the international community must not forget that more than 400,000 of the minority group are living in dire situations at home, a senior United Nations official said Tuesday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraphs-items paragraphs-items-field-news-story paragraphs-items-field-news-story-full paragraphs-items-full\">\n<div class=\"field field-name-field-news-story field-type-paragraphs field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<div class=\"entity entity-paragraphs-item paragraphs-item-one-column-text\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<div class=\"field field-name-field-text-column field-type-text-long field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<p>\u201cThere is a humanitarian crisis on both sides of the Bangladesh-Myanmar border that is affecting the world\u2019s largest group of stateless people,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unocha.org\/about-us\/ocha-leadership\">Ursula Mueller<\/a>, the UN\u2019s deputy relief chief, told reporters in New York, following her recent visit to Myanmar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe unfolding tragedy in the refugee camps in Cox\u2019s Bazar [Bangladesh] rightly captured the world\u2019s attention, but we cannot, and must not, forget the plight of over 400,000 Muslim people still living in Rakhine State who continue to face a life of hardship and marginalization due to movement restrictions,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>These restrictions severely compromise their rights and obstruct their access to health, livelihoods, protection, education, and other essential services, she said.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the press conference, Ms. Mueller, who is the Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, spoke to\u00a0<em>UN News<\/em>\u00a0about what she had seen inside Myanmar and about a meeting with some top officials, including State Counsellor and Nobel Laureate Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe discussed the importance of ending the violence, of stability and peace and reconciliation.
